The Best Father Daughter Wedding Songs

After going over the long list of father daughter wedding songs I’ve collected in my previous post, I’ve finally boiled down my selection to the following favorites, which I’m posting here to hopefully save some time for all other brides-to-be out there. (Note: I’ve linked all the song titles to preview/download pages for our convenience. You’ll need to download the free iTunes software to listen to a sample of each song.)

1) Daddy’s Angel (Words and Music by Anthony Carter)

If there’s one thing this father knows
The hardest part is letting go
But you will still always be…
Daddy’s little angel
I’m giving you away, but I’m not letting go…

This beautiful song, with its folk / country feel, was written specifically for the father daughter wedding dance. It’s one of those songs that has simple lyrics and a simple melody, but somehow has the ability to move your soul. For days after I first heard it, I couldn’t get it out of my head -- it’s that beautiful and powerful. It was produced by a talented song writer named Anthony Carter, who has made the song available for purchase on his website T Carter Music. This is the only place where you can download this song from if you’d like to use it at your wedding.

2) The Angel in My Arms (by Joe Pizzulo)

There’s an angel in my arms and soon she’ll fly away
But I know that time cannot erase the way I feel today
No matter where you go you’ll always be with me
Cause I’ll be dancing forever with the angel you will always be

I found this very pretty song on youtube and wondered why I had never heard it before (I’m what you might call a music junkie). I ended up finding out that it was produced by a wedding song company called Wedding Music Central, which specialized in producing wedding songs. I like the song itself and also the fact that it’s original and that very few people know about it which means it hasn’t already been played at a thousand other weddings. 3) Butterfly Kisses (by Bob Carlisle)

OK I know I said I didn’t want something really sentimental but this song really touched me, especially the last part:

She asked me what I’m thinking and I said “I’m not sure-I just feel like I’m losing my baby girl.”
She leaned over…”Walk me down the aisle, Daddy-it’s just about time. Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don’t cry!”

There are songs I like for their music and then there are ones I like for their lyrics, but Butterfly Kisses is a rare gem where I like both its music AND its lyrics.

4) I Loved Her First (by Heartland)

When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep
And I prayed that she’d find you someday
But its still hard to give her away
I loved her first…

This song’s lyrics may be simple, but they capture the sentiments of the bride’s father so perfectly. This is a very popular song a lot of people choose for their father-daughter wedding dance -- and when you listen to this song, the reasons why are obvious.

5) Gracie (by Ben Folds)

You can’t fool me, I saw you when you came out
You got your momma’s taste but you got my mouth
And you will always have a part of me
Nobody else is ever going to see…

This song is funny and touching at the same time. I was looking for slower songs but that was before I knew that a song could be both sweet and fast at the same time. Very cute song.

6) Sing Me A Song Again, Daddy (by Cherie Gil)

I am asking for your blessing
As I’m about to be the wife
Of a man I know who loves me
And I’m proud to be his bride.
Dad the time has come for me to leave your side…

This is such a perfect song for the father-daughter dance, with its relevant lyrics and a captivating melody, that I wonder why it’s not recommended more often (as a song for this purpose). The lyrics are about how a father’s songs of love will carry his daughter through any tough times that lie ahead.

7) My Little Girl (by Steve Kirwan)

As I dance the last dance
With my little girl
And the first with the woman
Who’s found her place in the world
I see the woman in you
But for my whole life through
You’ll always be my little girl…

Another song produced by Wedding Music Central. I definitely prefer their “The Angel In My Arms” but this one is nice too. The music is just OK but the lyrics are great. Just like the other one, this song can only be downloaded from Wedding Music Central.

8 ) Unforgettable (by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole)

Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that’s how you’ll stay
That’s why, darling, it’s incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too…

This song is played at a lot of weddings. We’re all familiar with the melody. Although the lyrics aren’t that relevant to either weddings or father-daughter relationships, the fact that Natalie Cole was able to sing this song with her father Nat King Cole (thanks to technology) long after he had passed away is, to me, symbolic of how we can never lose our fathers. Not even to death, and certainly not when you leave home to get married.
